Dating red flag: he asks to split the bill.
You dressed up, showed up, and brought your best conversation. Then the check arrives and he suggests splitting it 50/50. Just like that, it quickly becomes one of the worst first dates you’ve ever had. You won’t be going for a second date.
If we’re still questioning “who pays on a first date”, it makes us wonder if chivalry is dead.
Unspoken rules of dating: men should pay for dates.
You’re not alone in expecting him to pay. It’s common dating etiquette, and most people agree. In a NerdWallet survey, a majority of Americans said men should pay on a first date.
A majority of Americans said men should pay on a first date: 78% of men and 68% of women.
What people on Reddit are saying about “who pays on a first date”
What women are saying
From r/AskWomenOver30, r/dating_advice, and r/dating
“To me, it’s not about money. It’s about the signal they send out.”
“The men I had the best relationships with always insisted on paying for a first date. Any time a man has been eager to split, it’s ended up in me putting in most of the effort later down the line.”
“I am looking for a boyfriend who enjoys being generous with me and doting on me.”
And plenty of men agree
From r/AskMenRelationships and r/OnlineDating
“What’s the big deal? Pay for the meal. Open the doors. Give her your coat if she’s cold.”
“Call me old-fashioned but I prefer to pay, always. It’s just something that is an integral part of my gentleman code.”
Being generous: it’s not about the money, it’s about the effort.
Women interviewed by the BBC shared the same sentiment: they can pay, but that’s not the point. One said she’d be just as happy at a fast-food spot as a five-star restaurant, as long as he planned it and picked up the bill. For her, it’s about effort and keeping a few traditional gestures alive, and sometimes it’s nice to simply be looked after.
Even celebrities are debating splitting the bill on a date, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya went on Agree to Disagree and debated splitting the bill 50/50 on dates. Both agreed that a man should always pay for a first date.
Zendaya said “paying for a first date shows a little chivalry.” While Pattinson agreed, he also noted that it’s attractive if a woman secretly pays for the date.
Tips for a first date:
The “reach for your wallet” moment is often a test.
A Chapman University study of 17,000 people found that 57% of women offer to help pay, but 39% hope he turns them down, and 44% are bothered when he expects them to split.
In other words, offering is often a polite gesture, not an invitation to accept. How he responds early on tells you a lot about how he’ll show up later.

Worst first dates
The BBC also collected some first-date horror stories that, hopefully, most women never have to experience:
- He chose an expensive restaurant, complained about the prices, suggested splitting, then his card declined. She covered the whole meal and never saw a cent back. “I could afford it, but that’s not the point.”
- He picked her up in a Porsche, rushed to the restaurant for the early-bird special, and hid the à la carte menu when they sat down.
If any of these sound familiar, you know the bill was never really the problem. It’s walking away feeling like you weren’t worth the effort.
