The winter season, for many, means packing up a duffel bag or suitcase and heading out toward some new scenery for a winter getaway! From the ski trips and spa weekends to escaping the cold weather on a tropical vacation, this is the perfect time of year to travel with someone special. Hitting the slopes will be more exhilarating with your partner, a couples massage is always a nice treat and soaking up the sun on the beach is much better when someone is sitting next to you—right?

Unfortunately, travel plans of all kinds—holiday travel plans and winter getaways, included—had to be cancelled or rescheduled this year due to the global pandemic. Large-scale events like music festivals and cultural gatherings were no longer happening. Businesses were forced to close their doors, many of them tourist destinations and even some established hotels. Furthermore, states started requiring mandatory quarantine times for visitors and countries implemented their own bans and restrictions on Americans wishing to travel abroad. If you were hoping to travel in 2020, well, it wasn’t your year.

But 2020 is (finally) over and a year filled with travel possibilities awaits! Travel bans and restrictions for visitors continue to be lifted or less restrictive, allowing Americans to visit desired locations more easily. Some are still wary of spending time at the airport and boarding a plane, though—which can only mean one thing: ROAD TRIP!

And winter couldn’t be a more perfect time to hit the road with your special someone. For many living in the United States, chances are there’s a snow-covered, uber-romantic wonderland route to drive down with your sweetie. You also likely have some lodging options that are a couple hours away, be it cabins on the mountain or a five-star ski resort. This season is begging you to get out of town!

So, have an idea of what to plan for your winter getaway? Read on for Seeking’s travel tips for this winter season.

Winter Getaways: Ski Weekend

Looking to hit the slopes? This winter getaway could be a really fun activity to experience with a partner, especially if you both enjoy skiing and/or snowboarding. Maybe you’ll get competitive on the mountain and that energy will follow you to the bedroom, who knows?!

As for finding somewhere close to ski and stay at, a quick search shows a number of popular destinations have open lodging and lifts. And for a good number of us living in the U.S., there’s a mountain or two that’s nearby and easily accessible. And on that nearby mountain, there’s usually a ski resort and possibly a number of additional lodging options.

The hospitality industry has been hit hard, but it’s coming back—and ski resorts are no exception! Some top destinations to consider include Squaw Valley, CA; Breckenridge, CO; Vail, CO; Park City, UT; Stowe, VT.

Hit the slopes during the day and then slow it down in the evening with an intimate dinner or get cute-sy and make some s’mores. It’s a great winter getaway for both new couples or those who have been together for a handful of years.

Winter Getaways: Bed & Breakfast Weekend

Sometimes you just want to get away. You don’t need a reason, the destination isn’t super important to you and you don’t need a reason to hit the road. You’re just looking for some new scenery and to forget reality for a fleeting moment, right?

Well, if this describes you or your partner, we highly suggest a romantic weekend winter getaway at the nearest adorable bed-and-breakfast—or go for the one that’s a little farther away, if you’d like. Spend the weekend just relaxing and enjoying each others’ company from the comfort of a quaint B&B bedroom.

What you’ll do obviously varies greatly with your home location. Maybe you’ll walk down the beach together or go on a hike through a canyon or around a mountain. Maybe there’s a town nearby to explore, with dining options and places for a quick nightcap before hitting the sack.

Winter Getaways: Spa Weekend

The cold winter season isn’t kind to the skin, which is why a couple’s spa weekend is an ideal getaway this time of year. And great spas are found everywhere, from large metropolitan cities to small, touristy towns.

You can luxuriate together with couple massages and other paired treatments or go solo and meet up afterward. Regardless of what you choose to do on this winter getaway, you’ll be relaxed and rejuvenated and can really enjoy your time with your partner.

You also can combine two interests with a ski and spa weekend. Hit the mountain first and get pampered—and recover from those falls—afterward. And don’t forget to throw in some hot tub time!

Winter Getaways: Beach Weekend

If you happen to be so lucky to live somewhere where it’s still considered “warm” outside (we’re looking at you, Southern Californians and Floridians), then why haven’t you hit the beach yet?

Find a nearby resort and spend the weekend enjoying the beach from a new point of view. Whether you’re in Newport Beach, CA or Miami, FL, soaking up some sun on a beautiful winter’s day is going to be the refresh you didn’t know you needed.

Consider ordering in from your favorite restaurants and stream your favorite movies for some nighttime Netflix-and-[insert activity here]. Why aren’t you booking a suite for this winter getaway right now?

Winter Getaways: Want to Travel Abroad?

If you were hoping to travel internationally this season, a number of countries have opened their doors to Americans again. There are still some proverbial hoops to jump through, though, as each country has specific protocols that visitors must follow to travel to and reside in that country.

Here is a list of some top destinations to consider—just remember to look into each country’s laws and procedures for potential visitors. No one wants to be surprised—and disappointed—at customs!

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Aruba
  • The Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Bermuda
  • Brazil
  • Costa Rica
  • French Polynesia
  • Grenada
  • Honduras
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • Maldives
  • Mexico
  • Morocco
  • Panama
  • Puerto Rico
  • South Africa
  • St. Barts
  • St. Kitts & Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Maarten
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Turks and Caicos
  • United Arab Emirates
  • U.S. Virgin Islands

Whatever you decide to do with your time this season, make sure you’re spending it with someone special! Take a trip with your partner, have some fun and really get to know each other—or just strengthen your already-strong relationship!

(And one last tip, men: Remember most of these travel ideas are also conducive for hitting the course for a round of golf while your partner pampers herself at the spa!)
